KEARNEY — Kearney’s Rotary Clubs will announce on Thursday the 12 “stars” from the Kearney area who will compete in the second-annual Kearney’s Dancing with the Stars 2.

The 12 participants, who come from all walks of life in the Kearney area, will spend the next seven months preparing for the competition on Oct. 21 at the Younes Conference Center. Volunteer dancers, dance instructors and celebrity judges will help raise money to benefit one primary beneficiary along with causes identified by Kearney Noon Rotary and Kearney Dawn Rotary, both locally and internationally.

The 2017 beneficiary is Central Nebraska Veterans Memorial, a project to create a multi-million dollar veterans memorial at the new Central Nebraska Veterans’ Home.

More than 700 people attended last year’s fundraiser.

Josh Lamberson and Elizabeth Plinske took the People’s Choice Award. The Judges Choice Award for best dance went to Marge Lauer and Jason Sharp.

That night brought in about $98,000.

It benefited the Kearney Area Children’s Museum, Kearney Family YMCA, Kearney Jubilee Center, Nebraska Firefighters Museum and Education Center, the Alzheimer’s Association and Rotary International.
